Renewed awareness

For this season, every step involves deliberate exertion.
Yet since this is only for a brief time, one thing emerges:
Renewed awareness on how others cope daily with limitations of one thing or another.

“Set our foundations on the holy hills.”
Water our life with Your living river
Flowing down from Your throne above.

“Hallow O Lord our city’s day
while we work in joy,
That our common deeds may cast a smile;”
And life’s annoy
Be all forgotten—
Receiving from You, our inward joy.

A midrash on Amy Carmichael’s “Foundations,” in Toward Jerusalem: Poems of Faith (SPCK, 1936).
