The “other” before us

If in their eyes we look deep enough, there are four faces we see the burning bush of Exodus 3:3:
The face of the stranger among us;
The face of the widow;
The face of the orphan;
The face of the poor in our land.
To stand before their face, we stand before God on holy ground.

A Christian reflection from reading Emmanuel Levinas’ book, Totality and Infinity: An Essay on Exteriority, trans. by Alphonso Lingis (Netherlands: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 1979).
